SJRC is holding a free come-and-try-it event where you can check out slide seat rowing.
When? Sunday July 16, 7:30 to 11:00 – but come early. Slide seat boats are narrow and tippy, so it’s hard to learn in the wind. And this is Newfoundland, so it’s sure to be windy. Conditions usually kick up over the morning, so it’s best to come early.
Where? At our boathouse, which is down on the lake around the back of the Regatta boathouse.
What do I have to do? Just show up. No fees, no registration. You’ll sign a waiver when you get there, then our coaches will work out who’s going out in which boats and get things organized.
What to wear? Ordinary athletic clothes are fine. It’s best not to wear a big baggy t-shirt, as it could get caught in things. Sunscreen is good. Shoes don’t matter – you leave them on the dock when you get in the boat.
Will I get wet? You could. Shells can flip, though it doesn’t happen often. Our coaches will be there to fish you out and help you into the launch if it does. But please, if you aren’t comfortable swimming, this isn’t the event for you.
What about the weather? Ah, you would have to ask… If it’s too windy, we can’t row. If in doubt, check our home page for an update the morning of the event. If we have to cancel, we’ll try to reschedule for the following Sunday.
What if I want more? The club has a range of programs for rowers of different ages and levels of experience. Adult novices and fixed seat rowers can join our adult rec program – half-season memberships begin after the regatta and drop-ins are possible. We can work with fixed seat teams who’d like to stay together (though we have no six-seat boats!). Young novices can join our learn-to-row program, which runs weekday mornings from 9-12 for eight weeks in the summer. Check the program page on our website.
