Youth Development

Youth Development is a non-competitive program offering youth aged 12 to 17 a chance to develop a solid foundation of skills in the sport of slide seat rowing. This program targets those who have participated in at least one season of Learn to Row or fixed-seat rowing.  In addition to rowing technique, we will cover coxing technique; boat safety; and concepts of physical well-being, including hydration, muscular strength, flexibility and diet. The goal of Youth Development is to provide rowers with intermediate skills and knowledge in a fun, engaging, team-oriented environment. These skills can then be used to transition to a competitive rowing stream.

In 2021, Youth Development will have three practices per week, beginning the week of May 10 and ending in late October (exact end date depends on weather). In spring and summer practices will be held Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 and Saturday morning from 8:00 to 10:00.  (In the fall, evening practices will shift earlier as the days become shorter.)

The charge for this program is $400 for the season, which includes (mandatory) membership in Rowing Canada and Rowing Newfoundland.  Participants under 17 who have not rowed with SJRC before must complete a swim test in order to participate.

Please register online at Rowing Canada and etransfer the payment to [email protected] prior to the first practice.  Parents, please be sure to register your child’s name and birth date online, not your own!  A registration cap will be applied to this program in accordance with facilities limitations.

Detailed instructions on how to register and pay by e-transfer are available here, or check the Membership page for more information.
