The St. John’s Rowing Club is proud to offer year-round training opportunities for juniors and adults of all experience levels. We train from November to May at our indoor training facility located at Reps Fitness (92 Elizabeth Avenue). Read below for more information on our winter program offerings:

Junior Development

The Junior Development program is designed to provide a space for youth rowers to develop their physical, technical, tactical and life skills as they work towards their rowing goals. This program follows the “Train to Train” pathway of athlete development, and activities include skills and drills, race simulation, ergometer/dryland training, and racing in club regattas. The program is taught in a fun and supportive environment with a goal of continuing to develop a solid foundation of skills. Participants are introduced to basic measures of fitness and strength on the rowing machine and encouraged to work as a crew toward collective goals on the water. When they reach the age of 15 and after one season of Junior Development, athletes may choose to transition to the Junior Competitive program pending evaluation by the coaching team.

Cost: Full season $310

Age: 12-18 years (birth year 2006-2012)

Practices: 2 sessions per week – Wednesdays 6:30-8:00pm, Sundays 10:00-11:30am

No experience required.

Junior Competitive

The Junior Competitive program is designed to introduce junior athletes to high-performance training and prepare them for competitive racing. Junior Competitive athletes participate in a combination of on-water, ergometer, and strength and conditioning sessions year-round. Participation in off-season/winter training is mandatory for athletes in this program. This program follows “Learn to Compete” and “Train to Compete” long-term athlete development, and athletes will therefore be expected to compete in 2000 m racing, head races, ergometer testing, and race simulations within training (e.g., seat racing).

Cost: Full season $310 (strength and conditioning is an additional cost)

Age: 15-18 years (birth year 2006-2009)

Practices: 2 ergometer sessions per week – Mondays 5:00-6:30pm, Thursdays 6:30-8:00pm + 1 strength and conditioning (Friday evenings at EC fit)

Previous experience required: Athletes must have completed Learn to Row and at least one season of Junior Development or have other significant rowing experience (e.g., at another school or club, fixed-seat rowing, etc.). Athletes who do not meet the requirements may still be eligible pending an assessment, conducted by coaching staff, on a case-by-case basis to determine appropriate program placement.
