The Junior Competitive program is designed to introduce junior athletes to high-performance training and prepare them for competitive racing. Junior Competitive athletes participate in a combination of on-water, ergometer, and strength and conditioning sessions year-round. Participation in off-season/winter training is mandatory for athletes in this program. This program follows “Learn to Compete” and “Train to Compete” long-term athlete development, and athletes will therefore be expected to compete in 2000 m racing, head races, ergometer testing, and race simulations within training (e.g., seat racing).

Age: 15-18 years

Practices: 3-5 sessions per week + 1-3 strength and conditioning (variable depending on the time of year)

Previous experience required: Athletes must have completed Learn to Row and at least one season of Junior Development or have other significant rowing experience (e.g., at another school or club, fixed-seat rowing, etc.). Athletes who do not meet the requirements may still be eligible pending an assessment, conducted by coaching staff, on a case-by-case basis to determine appropriate program placement.

Please contact [email protected] if you are interested in joining this program.

Registration is now open for the Spring 2023 season!

Strength and conditioning training at APS

Athletes in the Junior Competitive program participate in weekly strength and conditioning training at the APS facility in Paradise. The sessions take place on Fridays from 5:30-6:30pm. This is a mandatory component of the Junior Competitive program for athletes who want to take their rowing to the next level, learn resistance training and injury prevention.
